"Surface Mode of Operation's products are tailored to Hawaii's architecture and interior design trajectory based upon observations of the past + present esthetic expressions of prolific creatives within the Hawaiian Islands...Our family was fortunate enough to work first-hand with great minds such as Vladimir Ossipoff...He often called upon my Dad in interest of his cork products. Paul said their meetings were often and mostly special requests to see his new cork products for hey mostly spoke together. I grew up most of my childhood in a mid-century Wimberly collaboration that my father purchased from artist / sculptor Mick Bownlee. It had O'hi'a wood flooring on the first landing and a spiral staircase scaling three floors up a  mountainside cul de sac. up the center. The exterior paint color blended in with the predominantly ironwood hillside and was faceted with a totally glass backside overlooking Nu'usanu Forest Reserve. It was a pleasant childhood riding my Mongoose and GT performer up and down all the little hills and playing Nintendo in other people's beautiful homes of that old neighborhood overlooking Downtown Honolulu / Pauoa and Nu'uanu / Pali side. I have an immense appreciation for the time period as a result of growing up in that home surrounded by Brownlee's sculptures (which came with the house) as well as others my father collected through knowing guys at job site demo / renovation or trade. Then, there's Mary Philpotts-McGrath, her succeeding daughter - Marion Philpotts-Miller - and layers of generational voice from interior design, art and architecture. Bettina Menhert of AHL is a huge inspiration to me. Her demeanor is well-practiced and honed. She is a very powerful mother, engages in the community all while running AHL, the oldest and busiest architecture firm in Hawaii."

After 1 brother and all 4 children contributed to the family business with Paul Rasmussen for his 50+ years in the industry, Nalani Sato (by far his youngest) is the last non-retired wallcovering specialist in the family.

She said of her role to take over Paul's brand and make it her own, "Surface Mode of Operation's products are tailored to Hawaii's architecture and interior design trajectory based upon observations of the past + present esthetic expressions from prolific creatives within the Hawaiian Islands...We were fortunate enough to work with great minds such as Vladimir Ossipoff.
